Microchipping

Microchipping is the process of inserting a small electronic chip into your pet. This chip contains an identification number that correlates with your contact information in a database. The chip doesn't have a battery, so you never need to worry about charging it. Oak Grove Veterinary in San Jose, CA, knows how important your pets are to you, and microchipping is just one of the many pet services we offer. Following are the answers to several questions we frequently receive regarding microchipping.

Microchipping

How Large is a Microchip?

The microchip is tiny, about the size of a grain of rice.

Is it Painful to Insert?

No. Because the microchip is so small and inserted under the skin, it is no more painful than a normal shot for the pet.

How Does It Work?

A veterinarian scans the animal when a lost pet is found and taken into a clinic. The radiowaves of the scanner activate the chip, and it sends an identification number to the scanner. The veterinarian then enters that number into a database to find the owner's contact information.

Is it Expensive?

Most clinics charge around $50 for microchipping. If you are having several other things done for your pet at our clinic, we do offer the CareCredit program for unexpected expenses.

Why Microchip?

Because if you have ever lost a pet, you know how painful that can be. You can put a collar with your information on it, but what if the pet gets hung up on a branch or something and the collar is removed? You can hang up signs and hope someone sees them, but it may be too late - your pet may have already passed through their area. While both of these are good ideas for ways to help locate a lost pet, microchipping is quick, easy, and permanent.

If you microchip your pet, be sure to keep your information updated in the database. For example, if you change phone numbers or move to a new house, you want to make sure you have that new information entered into the database. Having your pet chipped and then not keeping your information up to date doesn't help.
