Flea & Tick Prevention

Keeping Your Pets Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Fleas and ticks are not just a problem for your pets, they are a problem for you as well. Fleas and ticks are not picky about where they get their blood. By getting parasite prevention medication from your veterinarian, you can protect all of the furry family members in your home. Our veterinarians at Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital in San Jose would like to look at how to keep your pets safe from fleas and ticks.

Managing Your Yard for Ticks

You can help prevent these parasites by making sure your yard is not a comfortable home for ticks. Mow the lawn so that the grass is less than six inches tall. Ticks like to climb up to the top of plants because it makes it easier for them to grab hold of any animal that walks by. Clean up any piles of trash or brush, too.

Check Your Pets for Ticks

Check your pets for ticks whenever they come in from outside, especially if there is tall vegetation nearby. Tick bites usually do not hurt, so your pet will not scratch. The belly and legs are the places most targeted by ticks.

Vacuum Regularly

Your vacuum cleaner makes a great flea-killer. Adult and juvenile fleas do not survive a trip through a vacuum cleaner. The high heat and turbulent trip kill them. Make sure to vacuum the furniture as well. Change the vacuum bag or empty the canister after each cleaning. Flea eggs have been known to survive vacuuming. They hatch and the babies can crawl out.

Preventative Medication

One of the easiest ways to prevent fleas and ticks is to give monthly medication to your pet. These come in the form of chewable tablets or spot-on treatments that you place between your pet’s shoulder blades. Some chews are available that protect for three months. These medications need to be given year-round since fleas can live through the winter. They also thrive in homes with heating.
