Core Canine and Feline Vaccinations

Core Canine and Feline Vaccinations

How important is your pet’s health for you? Every year you should bring your pet into a veterinary care center like the Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital in San Jose, California. Just like you, your dog or cat friend needs to be vaccinated against several life-threatening diseases and illnesses. At Oak Grove, we highly recommend several core vaccinations for both dogs and cats alike.

What are the core vaccinations?

We recommend vaccinations to every dog and cat regardless of background, breed, ownership, and so on. These vaccinations cover your pet against diseases that have high instances of mortality and complications in dogs and cats. Therefore, you must get your little furry friend vaccinated according to these core recommendations.

Core canine vaccinations
Our staff recommends that your pet dog get the following vaccinations:

  • Parvovirus
  • Distemper
  • Adenovirus
  • Rabies
  • Leptospira

Each of these diseases is critical to your pet’s health. If not vaccinated for and left untreated, diseases like rabies could mean life or death for your furry friend. However, not all vaccines will be needed at the same intervals. For instance, the canine parvovirus and distemper vaccines should be given when your pup is less than 16 weeks of age and should be given every 6-8 weeks at several intervals. A booster shot should also be given at six months and one year of age as well. Meanwhile, other vaccines like rabies should be given at 3-months of age with a booster at one year of age and every three years thereafter.

All of that can be hard to keep track of, especially considering those are only two vaccines of the core list. More non-core vaccinations are recommended but less serious. Either way, our expert staff at Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital will ensure your dog's vaccine schedule is up-to-date and keeps your canine friend happy and healthy.
