Pet Heat Safety Tips from Your Veterinarians in San Jose

Pet Heat Safety Tips from Your Veterinarians in San Jose

Record-breaking temperatures are occurring across the country, and people are finding themselves taking precautions, staying hydrated, and staying indoors during peak sun hours. The same should apply to your pets as the temperatures reach new extremes this summer. At Oak Grove Veterinary Hospital in San Jose, we urge you to check on your furry friends more often, keep them hydrated, and watch for signs of overheating year-round. Here are some tips for keeping your beloved animals safe this summer.

Safety Tips for Your Pets in Weather Extremes

  • Hydration is vital in pets. As the temperature soars, keep fresh, clean water available throughout the house. If they are outside, be sure to have a portable bowl with you and regularly change the water. Place some ice in the water to keep it cool at all times.

  • Don’t leave your furry friends in a closed car. This is can be fatal to pets. When you need to go out, leave your animals at home.

  • Know the signs of overheating. Excessive panting or drooling, trouble with breathing, weakness, and an elevation of heart and respiratory rate are some of the many tell-tale signs of heatstroke. If you see these symptoms in your pets, call our animal hospital for immediate pet care.

  • If you must take your companion animals outside, make sure that they rest in the shade in order to cool down a bit.
